These pencils lay down layers of brilliant color. Soft colored pencils have a higher percentage of pigment to binder. One big difference in the various brands is the hardness of the pencil. The colors are rich and vibrant, and they layer well.

Prismacolor is a wax based colored pencil brand that many professional artists swear by. Oil based colored pencils do not develop a bloom, but they are more prone to smearing than wax based pencils. This wax bloom can be wiped away, but it can be prevented by using an artist’s fixative. One disadvantage of wax based colored pencils is that a drawing with these pencils may develop a wax “bloom” or a white surface on the drawing after a few weeks. Oil based colored pencils behave a bit differently on the paper, but they also are good for layering. Wax based colored pencils give a lovely sheen to the drawing and the colors can be layered, one upon the other. The pigment is what makes the color of art supplies, and in colored pencils, the pigment is held together by a wax or oil based binder. The biggest difference in various brands of colored pencils is the ratio of binder to pigment. You may ask yourself if those high-priced colored pencils are worth the difference in price. But, you may notice a huge difference in price in the various kinds of colored pencils. As we have already established the position of the eyes and the chin, we therefore know where the top of the head is situated: a distance above the eye line equal to the distance between the eyes and the chin.Colored pencils can be found in art supply stores, discount stores, or even in your local grocery store. The top of the head - In most portraits the eyes appear approximately half way down the head. You will usually find that the length of the nose is comparable to the distance from the center of the lips to the bottom of the chin. The bottom of the chin - Now switch to using the length of the nose as a unit measurement. The width of the mouth - To establish the width of the mouth you should draw a line from the center point between the eyes, through the width of the nose and it should cross the line of the lips close to the corner of the mouth. The level of the mouth - The distance between the eyes is used to judge the space between the bottom of the nose and the center line of the lips. The length of the nose - The distance between the eyes is compared against the length of the nose which is generally longer. The width of the nose - The distance between the eyes helps us to determine the breadth of the nose which is often slightly wider. The width of the eyes - The distance between the eyes is usually very close to the width of each eye which helps us to estimate their size. This distance is important as it becomes our fixed unit of measurement for establishing the features of the face. The distance between the eyes - The first marks we make on the paper is the distance between the eyes. If you can establish the precise relationship between the proportions of the eyes, nose and mouth of a portrait, you should be able to capture a recognizable likeness of your subject.
